Deli worker spotlight! In honor of "The Jewish Deli" exhibition on view now, we fondly feature artist Gary Baseman's mother of blessed memory, Naomi Baseman, who was "head bakery sales lady" at @canters_deli for 35 years ❤️ Both Naomi and her husband Ben were Holocaust survivors from Eastern Europe who made LA their home and raised four kids while pursuing work in the bakery at Canter’s and as an electrician, respectively. Gary Baseman's family is featured throughout his work—catch a glimpse via our link in bio.
This week also happens to mark nine years since the opening of the exhibition "Gary Baseman: The Door Is Always Open," a retrospective of Baseman's work displayed in a recreation of his childhood home—complete with his parents' furniture. (Visit @garybaseman to see fantastic highlights!) And in true full-circle fashion, during the run of the exhibition, the Skirball sold rugelach from Canter’s for visitors to enjoy in honor of Mrs. Baseman.
