LOS ANGELES—This summer, the Skirball Cultural Center presents six free, Thursday-night performances as part of the critically acclaimed Sunset Concerts series showcasing contemporary interpreters of musical traditions from around the world. Season highlights include the Los Angeles debut of Vieux Farka Toure, son of the late Malian guitarist and multiple Grammy Award-winner Ali Farka Toure; Hugh Masekela, the legendary South African trumpeter and composer; and the fiery Cecilia Noël, who has been called the Latin Tina Turner, backed at the Skirball by her 18-piece band The Wild Clams. Entering its 11th season, the series kicks off on Thursday, July 19 with UK-based Zohar, combining Jewish and Middle Eastern sounds with dance grooves and sampled downbeat breaks to create a powerful “ethno-ambience.” “With this year’s Sunset Concerts we’re bringing to Los Angeles some of the most exciting world music artists working today,” says Yatrika Shah-Rais, Music Director, Skirball Cultural Center. “The series is part of the Skirball’s ongoing ambition to explore world arts and culture in the context of Jewish heritage, immigration and the American experience.”
