Teaching Our World
through the Arts, 2010-2011

towta.jpgTeaching Our World through the Arts is a professional development program that prepares K–Grade 12 teachers to use film, dance, visual arts and architecture, theater, and music in their classrooms. Teachers learn strategies for creating and implementing arts-based curricula that connect to exisitng units and lessons. Coursework includes classroom workshops, gallery tours and live performances at the Skirball, and lesson planning.

The course is divided into four strands. Teachers are welcome to sign up for any combination of up to four strands. Each strand consists of four full-day Saturdays of training, accompanied by a gallery tour or live performance.

Strand One: FILM AND MOVEMENT
Four Saturdays • September 25 and October 16, 23, and 30 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Enroll in this four-part interactive residency led by artists from the nonprofit arts education organization Blue Palm. Teachers will create "Video Portrait" projects combining writing, filmmaking, and movement/dance based on themes of heritage and immigration. Teachers will learn to identify excellence in film and movement and acquire techniques for adapting the "Video Portait" project to the classroom.

Strand Two: VISUAL ARTS AND ARCHITECTURE
Four Saturdays • November 13 and 20, December 4 and 11 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Learn to develop lines of inquiry based on works of visual art and architecture. Using objects from the Skirball's collection and on view in its changing exhibitions, teachers will learn the process of building curriculum units with a particular work of art or architecture as the focal point.

Strand
Three: THEATER
Four Saturdays • January 29 and February 5, 12, and 19 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Discover how theater can serve as a pathway to learning about poetry, history, literature, and science. Theater artists will work with teachers to gain awareness of their strengths and goals, examine the practical and emotional aspects of being an artful teacher, and learn useful techniques for creating arts-based lesson plans. Participants will also enjoy discounted admission to local theater productions referenced in class.

Strand Four: MUSIC
4 Saturdays • March 12 and 26, April 9 and 16 • 8:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.
Enjoy artist-led workshops that provide teachers with vocabulary and inquiry-driven teaching tools for connecting music to language arts, math, science, and history. Experts in the field will discuss the rich cultural histories of featured musicians and the genres they represent. Teachers will receive free admission to concerts at the Skirball by the musicians discussed in class.
