Skirball Teen Corps

The Skirball seeks friendly, outgoing, and motivated teens to join the Skirball Teen Corps. By participating in this volunteer program, teens gain community service credit, professional experience in a museum setting, exposure to arts and cultural events, and the chance to collaborate with peers from all over Los Angeles. Participants will also be invited to attend Skirball film screenings, concerts, lectures, and other enriching, fun-filled public programs—all for free!

Volunteer activities include facilitating family art studio programs as well as holiday and weekend art workshops, staffing the Skirball’s acclaimed Noah's Ark galleries and hands-on archaeological dig site, and organizing and promoting Skirball public programs for teens. The Skirball Teen Corps is also a great service-learning opportunity!

WHO'S ELIGIBLE TO JOIN THE SKIRBALL TEEN CORPS?—All students in Grades 9–12 are encouraged to apply! No prior museum experience required! You must commit to participating eight hours a month for at least six months, but all participants are welcome to volunteer more hours and past the six-month commitment. Also, be prepared to provide your own transportation to and from the Skirball.

WHAT JOBS ARE AVAILABLE TO TEENS?—Throughout the six-month commitment, teens will be trained to take on a variety of duties. Job responsibilities include:

• Archaeological dig facilitator: Help families uncover the past by digging up artifacts, sculpting pots, and making mosaics at the Skirball’s simulated outdoor archaeological dig and field laboratory, open to the public Friday–Sunday.
• Art program facilitator: At the Skirball’s daily summertime drop-in art studios, in the Noah’s Ark gallery, and during special Sukkot and Hanukkah holiday programs, aid families in creating works of art to take home and treasure.
• Family sleepover assistant: Assist staff in implementing overnight program activities, such as exploring museum galleries after dark and engaging in science experiments, storytelling, night walks, star gazing, and more.
• Noah's Ark facilitator: Work with young children and families visiting the Noah's Ark as they engage in the gallery's various hands-on activities. Help bring further meaning to visitors' experiences as you explain the relevance of these activities to Noah's Ark's theme and mission: to welcome the stranger and build community.

WHAT IS THE TRAINING AND JOB SCHEDULE?—Participants must commit to participating eight hours a month. Specific time slots for the jobs described above depend on your availability and the Skirball’s programming schedules.
