Shalom Y'all: Images of Jewish Life in the American South

The exhibition Shalom Y'all: Images of Jewish Life in the American South indelibly links them in presenting the first comprehensive look at the southern Jewish experience. For the past ten years artist Bill Aron and writer Vicki Reikes Fox, under the auspices of the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience in Jackson, Mississippi, traveled throughout the American South to Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Alabama, and South Carolina photographing and collecting stories about southern Jewish life. Shalom Y'all tells the unique story of the Southern Jewish experience through three distinct voices: Bill Aron's evocative photographs, Vicki Reikes Fox's narrative woven into descriptive captions of the photographs, and personal stories told by southern Jews.

At the heart of the exhibition are photographs of the people themselves, Southern Jews whose Ashkenazi and Sephardic ancestors arrived, some as early as the 1700s, from Germany, Austria, Rhodes, and beyond to seek opportunities in a new land. The exhibition is divided into five sections; each testifying to the important role Jews play in Southern life as well as to the unique merging of Southern and Jewish culture. Road Trip pays homage to the many Jewish peddlers who were instrumental in developing the South. Their names are on buildings, streets and even towns throughout the region. Lox, Bagels and Grits celebrates the tasty convergence of the distinct Jewish and Southern culinary traditions. Peddlers, Planters and Politicians attests to how intricately involved the Jewish community is in the growth and development of large and small communities through the South. Magnolias and Menorahs explains how central the synagogue has become to Jewish life and emphasizes its decidedly Southern character. Southern Ties depicts the unique characteristics of Southern Jews who embrace their religion, tradition and values while simultaneously embodying Southern characteristics such as Southern hospitality, love for the land, and southern accents. These photographs and the accompanying text reveal how the intertwining of both cultures, Southern and Jewish, has resulted in a rich, multifaceted, and peerless American Jewish experience. A companion book, foreword written by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Alfred Uhry and includes 137 images, is available through Algonquin Books.
