ABOUT THE PROGRAM
In this workshop, participants will work on writing compelling first-personal narratives.
Personal essay is a broad term that encompasses both essay and book-length memoir, but always details the writer’s journey through a specific experience. In this concentrated workshop, participants will work on writing compelling first-person narratives—drawn from work already in progress or with prompts provided by the instructor—employing such craft elements as character development, voice, and scene-setting to create powerful stories.
Instructor: Amy Friedman has published two memoirs, three children’s books, and hundreds of stories and essays in magazines and newspapers around the world. She is also a syndicated columnist of children’s stories. For the past twenty years, she has taught personal essay and memoir in universities in Canada, at UCLA Extension, Case Western Reserve University, Idyllwild School of the Arts, and PEN USA.
