COURSES

Identity, Protest, and Hope in Israeli Visual Culture

This class has been canceled.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Examine the expression of different artistic and cultural traditions in Israel today, including their religious, secular, ethnic, historical, and political roots.

Because of prohibitions on creating pictorial imagery, traditional Jewish culture was mainly expressed through the literary arts. The visual arts played only a minor role. Learn how the emergence of the state of Israel in 1948, influenced by Zionism and the aftermath of the Holocaust, created a monumental change: a new cultural experience wherein secular life and Jewish heritage formed a new visual artistic language.

Instructor: Dr. Anat Gilboa is a Visiting Professor of Art History, UCLA Y&S Nazarian Center for Israel Studies.
