About the Program

Get ready to dance along to the Caribbean reggae, calypso, soca, and steel drum beats of Upstream.

Led by singer-guitarist Haile Blackman—originally from the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago and son of the legendary creator of soca music, Ras Shorty I—Upstream boasts a seasoned and celebrated group of performers. Steel drum extraordinaire Derek Brewstafari is also a Trinidad and Tobago native and will tug at your heartstrings with his melodic steel drum tones. John McKnight (bass, trobomone, keyboards, guitar, and vocals), Daniel Lopilato (keys and vocals), and Mark Spiller (drums and vocals) complete the stellar crew.

Upstream’s discography  includes Upstream (1995), Life (2000), Jump to the Rhythm (2001), To Da Maxx (2007), Pick Up Yourself (2007), 21st Century Live (2013), Here, There and Everywhere (2014), and Steel Drum Session Vol. I (2014). They are currently working on a new collection of songs to be released before the end of the year.
