About the Program

Calling all aspiring archaeologists to the Skirball’s dig site! With the help of the archaeological staff in an outdoor field laboratory, discover what we have in common with people who lived centuries ago.

Slip on an archaeologist’s vest, sift and sort to find ancient artifacts buried beneath the sand, weigh and examine your findings, and analyze clues to piece together the story of an ancient Iron Age town.

In honor of California Archaeology Month, the dig site will host special activities every Saturday throughout the month of October. On Sundays, look out for the Hands on History touch-cart to get a real feel for the ancient world!

October 1 and 15:  Find out what cake and archaeology have in common! Learn all about underground layers, then make your own 3D map to take home.

October 8 and 22: Piece together the past! Inspired by ancient mosaics, use tiles, beads, shells, and more to create your own design.

October 29: Design your own archaeology field notebook! Experiment with collage materials with artist Kristin Donner to create a notebook and record your discoveries.

Dig activities may be moved indoors due to weather.
