ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Critically hailed as one of the best soul voices of our time, British singer Alice Russell brings her distinctive sound and powerhouse vocals to the Skirball in celebration of influential music label Tru Thoughts’ fifteenth anniversary.
Exhibiting influences that run from Sarah Vaughan to Kate Bush to Alice Coltrane to Bach, Russell performs songs from her most recent album, To Dust, described by Rolling Stone as demonstrating “exquisite taste for beats and atmosphere.”
Opening are L.A.-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Lost Midas and San Francisco electro pop/soul band The Seshen.
Alice Russell has graced stages big and intimate, including the Montreal Jazz Festival, The Big Chill festival, and NPR's Tiny Desk Concerts. She also recently collaborated with David Byrne and Fatboy Slim for the track “Men Will Do Anything.” Her song “Breakdown” was featured in the season 7 trailer for Mad Men. In 2012, she issued a joint release with DJ and musician Quantic, Look Around the Corner, which fused soul and blues with overtones of folk and gospel. For Russell’s latest album, To Dust, the singer reunited with longtime producer and bandleader TM Juke, who also worked with her on My Favorite Letters (2005) and Pot of Gold (2008).
“Russell deserves to move from cult concern to a queen of British soul.”—BBC
