ABOUT THE PROGRAM
L.A. premiere! Explore the Sephardic musical tradition from the Balkans to the Middle East with the Guy Mendilow Ensemble, an award-winning sextet comprised of musicians from Israel, Palestine, Argentina, Japan, the UK, and the US.
The group will perform Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom: Ladino Songs Renewed, a sonic adventure that tells the stories of vagabond queens, pauper poets, and lovers lost to the sea, all set to spellbinding arrangements of old Sephardic songs sung in the endangered language of Ladino. Epic tales of sailors and kings vividly come alive in arrangements rich with musical storytelling, seamlessly interwoven with poetic narration and historical vignettes. The Chicago Tribune calls it “music of hope and affirmation, sophisticated in its delivery but easily accessible to listeners anywhere."
Members of the Guy Mendilow Ensemble are on the faculty of leading music schools like Boston’s Berklee School of Music, the New England Conservatory, and India’s Swarnabhoomi Academy of Music, and have toured and recorded with artists such as Bobby McFerrin, Yo Yo Ma, the Assad Brothers, Christian McBride, and Simon Shaheen. The ensemble has performed at countless world and traditional music festivals, performing arts centers, and universities.
Watch the Guy Mendilow Ensemble perform "Una Noche al Borde de la Mar" from Tales from the Forgotten Kingdom:
