ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Gain insight into the vibrant visual art scene of Los Angeles with five daylong tours taught by local experts.
From October 2011 through April 2012, the Getty Foundation presents PacificStandard Time, a multi-institutional survey of postwar visual art in Los Angeles, encompassing more than fifty exhibitions, programs, and performances focusing on Los Angeles art from 1945 to 1980.
In this course, students will view exhibitions at the Getty Center and LACMA as well as exhibitions on such themes as the unique innovations attributed to Southern California artists; architecture and design; craft; photography; ethnic art communities; and the women’s art movement. Class participants will explore these fascinating topics with local art experts and develop a greater appreciation of the dynamic and diverse arts community in which we live.
The course includes five daylong tours of galleries and cultural institutions participating in Pacific Standard Time.
Prior to each meeting, students will receive a detailed schedule of the session, including artist background, driving and parking directions, and suggestions for restaurants in the area. Carpooling is recommended. Note: Students’ e-mail addresses will be required at registration to communicate any last-minute changes to itineraries.
Instructor: Barbara Gilbert, Senior Curator Emerita of Fine Arts at the Skirball Cultural Center, has organized major exhibitions on artists Max Liebermann, Henry Mosler, Larry Rivers, and George Segal. Gilbert has a doctorate in art history from USC.
