ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Join prize-winning author Nicole Mones as she discusses Night in Shanghai, her epic novel about jazz, war, and the Holocaust.

The novel follows Thomas Greene, a classically trained pianist who is recruited from the segregated South by Chinese scouts. In Shanghai, Greene finds wealth and respect—until war explodes around him. Night in Shanghai brings to life not only the Shanghai ghettoes, but also China’s forgotten Jewish Resettlement Plan. Why did China make this move to save Jewish lives? How did jazz play a role? Historical images and film clips will enliven the talk.

Mones is the author of four books and numerous articles on China. A Q&A and book signing follow the program.

ALL UNCLAIMED RESERVED TICKETS FOR FREE PROGRAMS MAY BE RELEASED 15 MINUTES BEFORE THE EVENT’S SCHEDULED START TIME AND MADE AVAILABLE TO OTHER PATRONS. WE HIGHLY RECOMMEND ARRIVING EARLY TO PREVENT THE LOSS OF YOUR RESERVATION.
