ABOUT THE PROGRAM

In conjunction with the exhibition The Snowy Day and the Art of Ezra Jack Keats, explore the convergence of art and courage during this inspiring lecture series that focuses on artists who took social and political stands with their work.

Through visual presentations and in-class discussion, learn how artists such as Ezra Jack Keats, Francisco de Goya, Vincent Van Gogh, Louise Élisabeth Vigée Le Brun, Solomon Hart, and Toni Scott rose above their personal and cultural limitations to boldly provoke change.

Instructor: John Paul Thornton is the author of the book Art and Courage: Stories to Inspire the Artist-Warrior Within. His work has taken him around the globe, from Tibetan refugee camps in the Himalayas to the bustling tent-cities of Haiti and the historic steps of the Lincoln Memorial. He has worked with the United Nations Foundation and the National Endowment for the Arts, and has been honored by CBS television, the California State Senate, and the United States Congress for his programs promoting art, personal growth, and education.
