Bread and Roses—Yiddish Songs of the Jewish Labor Movement

A Singing Workshop

Thursdays, January 30–February 20, 1:30–3:00 pm

About the Program

Study, listen to, and sing Yiddish and English songs from both sides of the ocean that chronicle the struggle for better pay and conditions in the workplace. Discuss the work of labor poets Morris Rosenfeld, David Edelstadt, Avrom Reyzen, and others, while you learn Yiddish vocabulary in the process.

Instructor: Cindy Paley served as the Music Educator at Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, California for thirty-six years. For the past twenty years, she has been the cantorial soloist for Lev Eisha and N’shama Minyan, two prayer services for women in Los Angeles. In addition to her Jewish music recordings and family concerts, Paley teaches annual Yiddish music workshops at the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival in Poland and performs American folk songs of the 1960s with a trio, The Folk Experience.
