About the Program
Get up and groove with the world funk sounds of Delta Nove and the "RUBBABoX" instruments of special guest performer Lonnie Marshall.
Formed in a garage in Long Beach, California, Delta Nove has been leaving a trail of deep funk, thunderous Brazilian drums, smooth horns, and psychedelic sounds since their first independent release in 1998. After well over 1,000 shows around the country, eight independent releases, and years of musical evolution, the band has developed a singular sound—a mix of funk, rock, samba, Afrobeat, reggae, jazz, and electronic escapades.
Delta Nove will be joined on stage by Lonnie Marshall, an accomplished musician, songwriter, and educator. Marshall has taught at the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music since 2001 and for the HeArt Project of artworxLA. He is also the inventor of a recycled instrument and art piece called the “RUBBABoX,” a decorated box top played with rubber bands. Using their own inventive recycled instruments, his students have performed at the Hollywood House of Blues, Getty Villa, Nokia Plaza, Grammy Museum, Hammer Museum, Club Nokia, Amoeba Records Sunset, the Long Beach Funk Festival, and numerous other venues.
