About the Program
Enjoy classical music with a kick with the Santa Monica Youth Orchestra (SMYO), a dynamic organization that provides tuition-free music education to a diverse cross-section of youth in an effort to bring cultural understanding, cooperation, and peer mentorship to its participants. SMYO is a program of the Santa Monica Boys and Girls Clubs.
This year, SMYO’s Opus 5 Music Camp takes the Skirball amphitheater stage for their final performance, themed "Songs of the Land: Exploring the Many Voices of Our World through the Arts." The camp hosts musicians from France, China, Russia, and the Pan African Youth Orchestra of Ghana to work with students from all over LA build community and learn musical styles from one another.
Opus 5 strives to provide a holistic music and arts experience for children of all ages. The camp focuses on world music, touching upon many different cultures across the globe. Students learn about different forms of music, art, dance, and singing through field trips, observing live music performances, and daily camp activities. In addition, Opus 5 offers individual and group music tutoring from professional musicians across LA.
