Skirball Book Groups: Armchair Journeys

About the Program

Under the direction of a professional book group facilitator, participants examine the book together, analyzing characters, themes, and motifs and learning about the author’s background. Expect lively, interactive classes. Discussion questions are distributed in advance of each class session. Participants must read the book prior to each session.

SEPTEMBER: The Tiger's Wife by Téa Obreht—The story of a young doctor unraveling the mysterious circumstances of her grandfather’s death.

OCTOBER: Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi—A sprawling work of historical fiction that illuminates slavery's troubled legacy through the progeny of two half-sisters and their divergent paths.

NOVEMBER: On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong—A heart-rending story of an immigrant family, written as a letter from a son to his mother.

DECEMBER: A Long Petal of the Sea by Isabel Allende—An epic novel that follows two young people as they flee the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War.

JANUARY: Apeirogon: A Novel by Colum McCann—A story of two grieving fathers—one Israeli, one Palestinian—who forge a profound friendship across cultures.

Instructor: Janet Bain Fattal holds an MA in comparative literature from UCLA. She has taught world literature and composition at many levels. A screenwriter, novelist, and book group facilitator, Fattal loves to share her passion for stories and ideas with others, particularly in an informal environment.
