About the Online Class

Westerns are enduring and uniquely American, while also internationally admired and imitated. This four-session online series offers film aficionados a chance to immerse themselves in the expansive world of Western movies. In each session, we will pair two films for in-depth discussion—one classic and one contemporary "neo-Western."

Delve into the masterpieces by renowned directors such as John Ford’s The Searchers (1956), Kevin Costner's Open Range (2003), Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven (1992), Anthony Mann's The Naked Spur (1953), David Mackenzie's Hell or High Water (2016), and James Mangold's 3:10 to Yuma (2007). The international selection will include Akira Kurosawa's iconic Seven Samurai (1954) and Sergio Corbucci's spaghetti Western gem The Great Silence (1968). Take an unforgettable cinematic journey as we explore the vast landscapes, moral complexities, and timeless themes that define the Western genre.

Facilitator: Theodore Rand has led previous film discussion groups at the Skirball on the films of Billy Wilder, the Coen Brothers, and Wes Anderson, among others. He is a graduate of New York University and has held technology innovation positions at Miramax, Yahoo! Media Group, Fox Networks, and the Walt Disney Company.
