Stories from the Border

Tom Kiefer, Francisco Cantú, and Dora Rodriguez in Conversation

Tuesday, November 12, 7:30 pm

About the Program

Photographer Tom Kiefer and author Francisco Cantú (The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border) both worked on the US-Mexico border at the same time: Kiefer as a janitor for Customs and Border Protection and Cantú as a Border Patrol agent. Each felt compelled to share stories from this period: Kiefer through photography and Cantú through memoir writing. In this conversation, they will be joined by migrants’ rights advocate Dora Rodriguez, whose story of crossing the border in 1980 is featured in El Sueño Americano | The American Dream: Photographs by Tom Kiefer and who now works as trainer and recruiter for La Paloma Family Services in Tucson. Together, they will reflect on their experiences and their continuing efforts to assist those who are trying to reach the United States. Moderated by Skirball curator Laura Mart.

Kiefer’s and Cantú’s respective publications will be available for purchase. A signing follows the program.

Arrive early to view the exhibitions! The galleries will be open from 6:00 to 7:30 pm.
