About the Program
The Skirball is honored to welcome back to its stage the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA), the largest Black majority orchestra in the nation. During this evening, over one hundred musicians and choir singers will raise their instruments and voices in song to honor the memory of MLK's commitment to delivering civil rights for Black America. Founded in 2009, the nonprofit ICYOLA transforms the lives and minds of young people in Inner City Los Angeles through high quality music education. ICYOLA teaches inner-city youth the great music of the world and provides opportunities for its youth to perform that music in the most magnificent arts settings of the LA community. Its objective is to prepare its members for advanced study and high caliber success in music and music-related initiatives. ICYOLA achieves excellence by instilling the ancillary benefits that music instruction provides: problem-solving skills, critical thinking, self-reliance, self-confidence, self-discipline, and the crystallization and pursuit of meaningful purpose.
