Create a unique mobile to hang in your home inspired by the weeklong Jewish harvest festival, Sukkot—a time for giving thanks for the gifts of nature. Visit our link in bio for step-by-step instructions. For our mobile, we decided to include paper cutouts of leaves and a fruit that is relevant to the holiday, etrog (yellow citrus). Etrog is one of the four plants mentioned in the Torah as being central to Sukkot, along with lulav (date palm), hadass (myrtle tree), and aravah (willow tree).
Sukkot is often associated with the custom of building a temporary shelter called a sukkah (meaning “booth” or “hut” in Hebrew). Most historians believe this tradition began with farmers in ancient Israel who worked and slept in the fields during the harvest. While creating your art piece, reflect on what shelter means to you and consider ways you can take action this year to support someone who is homeless or living on the edge of homelessness.
