Meet Skirballer Gustavo Estrada

A man smiles outdoors by a lily pond for a photo.

Meet Gustavo Estrada, a Facilities Supervisor. Gustavo has been with us for about nineteen years! Gustavo took a few minutes out of his day to tell us a bit about his time here at the Skirball Cultural Center.

Q: Tell us about an exhibition that you’ve enjoyed here at the Skirball.

A: The one that I really enjoyed was Bill Graham and the Rock & Roll Revolution (May 7–October 11, 2015). This exhibition was a VR experience that allowed me to live and experience firsthand everything about music, from preparation to the actual process, and how it was done.

Q: Describe a Skirball event you had the opportunity to attend. What made it special for you?

A: Because I'm at work on the busiest days, I have the opportunity to enjoy almost 95% of all the events happening on campus, but if I have to choose, it will be festivals, all of which bring life, laughter, and smiles to adults and kids.

Q: What's one activity you prioritize outside of the Skirball? How does it interact with the work you do here?

A: Family, the word can be huge if you live up to its meaning; when you apply it, it's a new door to see things differently and to act differently.

Q: Tell us about a coworker who has gone above and beyond to represent the Skirball in their work.

A: Jose Guevara, it might surprise many, since he's my Senior Supervisor, but knowing his story and how hard he works to create a department from scratch, to me, represent not only his resilience and determination, but also the love and passion that characterizes him.

Q: What are you looking forward to learning more about yourself in the following year?

A: A long time ago, I learned that "learning" is something that you never stop; every day, you learn new things or new ways to see things, so I want to continue having that need to know every day.

Q: Anything else you'd like to share?

A: Starting work at Skirball was an incredible experience. To this day, it still amazes me how the Halls can change from one day to the next, and how the Courtyards can hold essential moments in life, such as a wedding, while also hosting a festival.

If that isn’t the definition of a Skirballer, we don’t know what it is! Thank you, Gustavo, for all that you do here at the Skirball.
