Meet Skirballer Marissa Starke

A woman smiles for a picture at her desk.

Meet Marissa Starke, our Manager of Institutional Giving. Marissa has been with us for one year and took a few moments out of her day to tell us more about what inspires her work here at the Skirball.

Q: Tell us about an exhibition that you've enjoyed here at the Skirball.

A: On the National Language really stayed with me. It was a powerful and moving exhibition that honored the endangered languages of the Americas—and, through them, the people and cultures often left out of the national conversation. It reminded me just how much diversity shapes this country, not just in language but in lived experience.

What made it especially meaningful was how it pushed me to slow down and pay closer attention to the people I interact with every day. It inspired me to ask more questions, listen more deeply, and build more intentional relationships—with coworkers, visitors, and the wider community we serve.

Q: Describe a Skirball event you had the opportunity to attend. What made it special for you?

A: I recently had the chance to attend the Common Ground Dinner: Celebrating Women, Storytelling, and Food—and it was unforgettable. The evening brought together women from diverse backgrounds to share personal stories and home-cooked dishes, all rooted in culture, memory, and identity.

What made it special wasn't just the amazing food (though that was a bonus); it was the feeling of connection. Each story opened a window into someone's life, and by the end of the night, you didn't just hear about different cultures—you felt part of something bigger. It perfectly embodied the Skirball's mission of building community through shared experiences.

Q: What's one activity you prioritize outside of the Skirball? How does it interact with the work you do here?

A: Outside of work, I spend time learning about native gardening and how to create environments that support local wildlife—especially birds, bees, and other pollinators that often get overlooked in urban spaces. It's my way of giving back to the land we live on and thinking more intentionally about how we coexist with nature.

That passion aligns closely with the Skirball's revitalized gardens in the Noah's Ark exhibition. It's exciting to see the institution embracing sustainability and restoration in such a hands-on way. Knowing that my personal interests connect with the Skirball's vision makes the work feel even more meaningful.

Q: Tell us about a coworker who has gone above and beyond to represent the Skirball in their work.

A: It's hard to choose just one—because honestly, I'm constantly inspired by the people I work with. What stands out at the Skirball is the way everyone shows up not just for their individual roles, but for one another. The level of care, collaboration, and commitment across the team is something I've never experienced anywhere else. That sense of shared purpose is what brings me back to campus each day, excited to contribute and support however I can.

Q: What are you looking forward to learning more about yourself in the following year?

A: I'm looking forward to continuing to grow within the community I serve. After a year at the Skirball, I've learned so much—but I also know I've just scratched the surface. Every day is a chance to deepen my understanding—whether it's discovering something new about a program, a practice, or a person on campus. I'm excited to keep learning not just about the Skirball, but about how I can show up in more meaningful ways for the people we serve.

We've enjoyed getting to know Marissa and look forward to many more special moments! Thank you, Marissa, for all that you do here at the Skirball.

About Skirballer Spotlights

Our institution is more than just a workplace—it's a community where each team member plays a vital role in bringing the Skirball's mission and values to life, and creating memorable experiences for all who walk through our doors. As a loving tribute to our original benefactors, Jack and Audrey Skirball, and because of the Skirballs' dedication to education and cultural exchange, we proudly call ourselves "Skirballers."

We regularly spotlight one of these Skirballers, showcasing their unique talents, passions, and contributions to our community. Through these introductions, we invite you to get to know the people who make working here truly something special.
