Meet Skirballer Vicki Phung Smith

Meet Vicki Phung Smith, a Curator with our Museum team. Vicki has been with us for three years and took time out of her schedule to tell us a bit more about her work here at the Skirball.

Q: Tell us about a past or present exhibition that you enjoyed and why.

A: The exhibition that I've enjoyed the most is On the National Language: The Poetry of America's Endangered Tongues. It was a treat to work closely with contemporary artist B.A. Van Sise and co-curator Sarah Daymude on this exhibition, and it was made more meaningful for all the diverse communities across the country that were included and felt a sense of ownership and pride in the project.

Q: Describe a Skirball event you had the opportunity to attend. What made it special for you?

A: I attended a program this past year called Holding Onto Humanity: Israelis and Palestinians for Peace that was deeply moving and inspiring. It featured members of the Parents Circle, a group of bereaved Israeli and Palestinian families who have chosen reconciliation over revenge amid the ongoing conflict. The conversation was nuanced and personal; offering a space to process current events that wasn't just divisive.

Q: What's one activity you prioritize outside of the Skirball? How does it interact with the work you do here?

A: In my free time, I love to hike and spend time in nature. It helps me clear my mind so that I can dream of new exhibition ideas.

Q: Tell us about a coworker who has gone above and beyond to represent the Skirball in their work.

A: Sarah Daymude is an amazing coworker! In her role as exhibition coordinator, she supports everyone in the museum department and makes the work day more fun.

Q: What are you looking forward to learning more about yourself in the following year?

A: I look forward to meeting new artists and seeing more exhibitions. I'm interested to see how contemporary artists and other museums are responding to what's going on in the world right now.

About Skirballer Spotlights

Our institution is more than just a workplace—it's a community where each team member plays a vital role in bringing the Skirball's mission and values to life, and creating memorable experiences for all who walk through our doors. As a loving tribute to our original benefactors, Jack and Audrey Skirball, and because of the Skirballs' dedication to education and cultural exchange, we proudly call ourselves "Skirballers."

We regularly spotlight one of these Skirballers, showcasing their unique talents, passions, and contributions to our community. Through these introductions, we invite you to get to know the people who make working here truly something special.
