Join our welcoming community of artists as you learn or deepen your handbuilt pottery skills in a collaborative, creative environment. Whether you're interested in making functional pieces or decorative works of art, this hands-on class encourages creative expression through a variety of handbuilding techniques.

In this three-part workshop, participants will create a unique vase inspired by Adam Silverman's work featured in the Skirball's Common Ground exhibition. The first session begins with a docent-led tour of the exhibition, offering inspiration and context before participants receive professional instruction in handbuilding techniques and begin shaping their own ceramic piece.

Students will begin by learning to make rolled slabs in order to build their vase over an organically shaped "ormer" (approx. 7″ tall). Once their shape is completed, a combination of painted underglaze and carved sgraffito will be demonstrated to paint/carve their designs into the surface of the clay. The vase will then be glazed by the instructor in a color of the student’s choosing.

Instructor: Allison Goodman has been an artist and designer for over forty years practicing in the fields of graphic design, environmental design, and ceramics.  Her degrees are Carnegie-Mellon University (BFA) and the ArtCenter College of Design (MFA), where her studies of Digital Theory have inspired her latest experiments in 3D printed ceramics.
