About the Artists
Rodrigo Amarante is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in Los Angeles who became an international name with his band Little Joy (alongside The Strokes’ drummer Fab Moretti and Binki Shapiro) He recorded and toured with Devendra Banhart on his last four albums, and recently earned an Emmy nomination for writing and producing the theme song for the hit Netflix show Narcos. Amarante is an inescapable figure in Brazilian music. He is a founding member of the iconic band Los Hermanos and the samba supergroup Orquestra Imperial (alongside Seu Jorge and Moreno Veloso). He has recorded, arranged, and written music with Brazilian icons such as Gilberto Gil, Tom Ze, and Marisa Monte and was elected one of the 100 best musicians in Brazilian history by Rolling Stone. Amarante’s first solo album, Cavalo was released worldwide in 2014. He released his first original film score for the British motion picture 7 Days In Entebbe in early 2018 and recorded his second solo album in 2019.
Born in South Florida in 1980 to Ecuadorian immigrant parents, the world-building, multi-instrumentalist Roberto Carlos Lange stitches together memories, impressions, and atmospheres to make detailed dreamscapes as Helado Negro. He produces, engineers, and mixes his own songs, literally creating and populating his own sonic world. His songs are awash with vibrant melodies, sharp lyrical vignettes, and subtle, even whispered hooks. Since his 2009 debut, Awe Owe, through his breakthrough records Private Energy (2016) and This Is How You Smile (2019), and to 2021’s Far In, Lange’s work continues to move past easy genre assignments. Lange’s ninth studio record, Phasor, picks up on that interest in the natural world but in the form of pop music. Lange has been awarded a United States Artist fellowship and a Foundation for Contemporary Arts grant. He lives in Asheville, NC.
