It's the time of year for making delicious meals and sharing those meals with family. This month we sat down with someone who feels like Skirball family, David Insauste. David is one of our site managers and has been here for over 23 years.

Q: Tell us about a past or present exhibition that you enjoyed and why.

A: We recently had a Punk exhibition here at the Skirball. From the moment I peeked inside, I knew this exhibit would be awesome. The posters, pins, and other objects on display were fascinating to see, but the best part was the community that came to experience it. It was such a joy to welcome so many guests dressed in punk attire and bringing great energy into the gallery. Seeing everyone’s smiles always brightened my workday.

Q: Describe a Skirball event you had the opportunity to attend. What made it special for you?

A: Puppet Festival is one of my favorite Skirball events to attend with my family because it brings them so much joy. I love watching the creativity unfold and seeing my kids take it all in. From small to enormous puppets, the festival never fails to delight us. What makes the event especially meaningful is the opportunity to spend the day together and create new family memories.

Q: What's one activity you prioritize outside of the Skirball? How does it interact with the work you do here?

A: Being a handyman at home has taught me to assess problems, find practical solutions, and follow through until the job is done. I have always enjoyed home improvement projects; they are my go-to activities when I need to unwind and reflect on life. Those same skills are central to my role as a Site Manager at the Skirball, where I must stay resourceful, adapt to unexpected challenges, and coordinate with many teams to keep the site safe, functional, and welcoming. Whether I am troubleshooting an issue or helping a team carry out a project, I bring a hands-on mindset and a commitment to making things work.

Q: Tell us about a coworker who has gone above and beyond to represent the Skirball in their work.

A: The first person who comes to mind is Melvin Covarrubias, a fellow Security Site Manager. Melvin started as a security officer and quickly advanced to a Site Manager through his dedication and strong leadership. He treats our staff with respect, leads by example, and is always willing to help others when needed. I value Melvin’s commitment to giving 100% in everything he does. His dedication and leadership demonstrate how seriously he takes his responsibility for keeping the Skirball safe.

Q: What are you looking forward to learning more about yourself in the following year?

A: I look forward to learning new methods and strategies that will help me become a more well-rounded manager. I also want to further develop my ability to “unlock Beast Mode” when needed—stepping up, taking charge, and leading with confidence when challenging situations arise.

Q: Anything else you'd like to share?

A: For me, the Skirball has been a place of opportunity, growth, and learning. I’ve had the opportunity to learn so much from my peers and from other departments. There is a strong sense of community and togetherness among those who work here, and I believe that spirit is what allows us to work together as a well-oiled machine. It’s something I truly value about being part of the Skirball community.
